The Democratic Party, once so pleased with the strength of its potential presidential candidates, is now in danger of losing the unlosable election. The Texas and Ohio results are rapidly receding into the past without either Senators Clinton or Obama gaining a clear edge; and their rivalry is becoming more bitter by the day, poisoning the Democrats' chance to win the presidency. Given that neither candidate will win the presidential nomination outright, it might be time to ask what would happen if neither candidate has gained the ascendency by the National Convention in August? The fight to become the next Democratic nominee for president of the United States might very well come down to the backroom dealings of a relative handful of Democratic Party operatives known as superdelegates and may create a massive political backlash against the winning nominee. First some historical perspective is necessary. The term superdelegate is an informal one, used to describe active Democratic party leaders and elected officials who can determine the Presidential candidate. These superdelegates will comprise approximately one-fifth of the total number of delegates and are drawn from a pool comprising Democrat members of Congress, governors, elected officials, previous presidents and vice presidents, leaders of Congressional houses and members and former members of the Democratic National Committee. The 2008 Democratic National Convention will have approximately 796 superdelegates, although this is subject to change right up to the Convention date. The Republicans have no comparable system, instead awarding delegates based on votes received.
